Hi everyone,
Can you believe it's February already? Winter began right on schedule and we haven't seen bare ground since the snow began to fall. It's been a very cold winter here, but maybe not as humid because I don't seem to be feeling it as much as I normally do.
We've had some good sized snow storms and a couple of ice storms, as well. With the cold temperatures, the ice stayed on the trees for quite some time, keeping many of the branches at critical breaking stage.
This week, it has warmed some. The icicles are gone and some of the snow has melted.
The groundhog predicted another six weeks of winter. I expect an early spring. I've noticed some of the branches around here are looking a little reddish, and this weekend I spotted a weeping willow tree that was looking very yellow. A sure sign that the trees know that something is up!
Another indicator is the picture above. We have a very fat mama squirrel preparing a nest. This will be the fourth generation since I began observing this family of squirrels. With such an early start, I wouldn't be surprised if we enjoy a second nesting in the autumn.
(You can click on the pictures to see them larger.)
This is one of the babies we watched last autumn. Still that cute little turned up nose! I'm constantly grateful that we saved some of the tree during last year's cutting of the tree. It may look unsightly, but it gives me endless hours of pleasure to watch these cute little critters.
A first time visitor to my garden. A Red-Shouldered Hawk. We have seen Red-Tailed Hawks, Merlins, Sharp-Shinned, and Cooper's Hawks, but never a Red-Shouldered in the yard. They really don't belong here at this time of year, but there it was, big as life!
Another even more surprising visitor - HOLY SMOKES! Is that really a Great Blue Heron down in the gorge behind my house? Yes, it really was. Not the best picture in the world, but I'll take it! If you could see the terrain behind my house, you would be amazed that this bird was down there. It was snowing that day, so the picture is a little "murky". The bird slid down a hill, balancing itself with its beautiful large wings, and then waded in the brook, coming close to my house, and eventually, it flew off, with a whoosh of its wings. I don't think there are fish in the brook, but I remember the kids next door catching crawfish there. We actually had another "first" this week, too. I have waited since 1997 to see a deer in my yard. Finally, yesterday, I saw tracks and scat, so we did have a visitor. Leave it to me to miss the deer, but catch the poop! ;-)
Last weekend, I decided to try and walk on one of my favorite trails. As luck would have it, cross-country skiers had opened a nice path to walk on. The light was beautiful, casting some great shadows on the forest floor.
On a recent drive on a road nearby, I passed by a farm and of course had to stop for my favorite scene. :-)
On a drive one day, we passed by some icy cliffs and decided to stop and take some pictures. As luck would have it, there were a couple of ice climbers there. They didn't mind me taking pictures, so I snapped away. You may have to click on the picture to see the man climbing the ice.
A typical winter scene while on the road - no, I wasn't driving, but you never know with me. I've been known to put the camera on the steering wheel. ;-)
Sunset by the lake near my house
A little friend watching me
Dawn outside my window
Shadows on the snow
And that's about all I have for now. Just a combination of pictures taken over the past month.
To those who have enquired, Mom is doing better. Thank you for asking. Her health has somewhat improved.
I hope all of you are well. I am healthy, but a little burned out, so I'm just doing what needs to be done and taking one day at a time.
Take care and I'll see you when I can.
Big hugs to all of you.

Sandpiper, sorry about your Mom. I know this time of life can be tough. I hope you find the strength you need to get through your days and a little joy to lift your spirits as well. These photos are wonderful as always. I don't know which is my favorite. I do love the tree trunks in the woods and all the cute squirrels. The story about the heron is amazing. I'm glad it is all right.
Darn, I just wrote out a comment and it didn't "take'...
But quickly I'll say, loved the photos and glad you updated. All the best to your mom.
Such beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing them with all of us. Glad to know your mom is doing better. I know the visiting and running can be draining. My great-grandmother was in that type of situation for years and my great aunt would visit on a daily basis and after she passed my aunt said it was weird not to have to go visit it was such a huge part of her life she felt lost not doing it. I hope things get better and that you are taking the time for yourself as well. Many prayers and thoughts are sent your way.
I'll tell you Lin...you sure know how to play catch up! This was just a wonderful post! My favorite of all the pictures was the little squirrel popping up out of the stump - how darn cute is that? Loved it! The Red-shoulder is beautiful - glad you got a look at that hawk this time of year. And the heron behind your house - so neat! Enjoyed the ice climbers as well!
Best wishes for you while visiting and running errands for your mom. It takes its toll but is well worth the time! See you next time!
Beautiful photos (or photos of beauty?), and a cracking Red-Shouldered Hawk - welcome back!
wow! I enjoyed all your winter photos and your winter friends...the squirrels. I especially loved the farm and snow scenes and the ice sticking to the branches. Take care.
I have missed your beautiful photos. I just love the snow and we were fortunate to have some in the Forest these last couple of weeks.
Beautiful, beautiful photos. Thank you for taking time to share them with us, even during this difficult time.
These are some of your best photos EVER! I love them all...some comments:
the baby squirrel coming out of the stump so very cute!
a great blue up there now?
that landscape...stunningly beautiful.
BEAUTIFUL pictures! I've so missed our "walks!" I love that sunset picture and all the squirrel ones ~ especially the fat li'l guy watching you! What a cutie!
How wonderful to see you again! It's like visiting with an old friend, though I don't know you well. Yours is my favorite site for photos and your love of nature. Blessings to you and your family ... your Mama will be OK and you need to take care of you, too, don't forget that.
We had a hawk attacked and killed by a huge other hawk right in front of my face ... sitting on our fence. I was so upset, I ended up scaring the larger one away, only to leave the other one lying practically upside down in the snow. It broke my heart that I had interfered ... it was just so hard to watch. Finally, over a week later, some crows came and ate much of the dead one, then the lg one showed up and 5 crows were way above it in a tall tree squawking up a storm and dive-bombing it! All creatures are cold and hungry out there this winter ... but today it was in the 60s! Instead of ice and snow, we now have lots of mud!
Again, so good to see you, read you, see your beautiful photos.
Love,
SisSTAR Kylita
wow...I was going to say
this is a winner shot, but then which one isn't! Thanks for sharing.
Hope all's well!
Beautiful scenes around you Lin. I agree that it will be an early spring! :c) Glad things are stable with your mom. Good to see you here again. Hugs to you. :c)
It is always so good to find one of your posts and know that you got out a bit and took photos. I hope your mom continues to do better and I know you must be very tired. I will pray for your strength and patience and some sunny moments in each day. I love your little squirrel and think it is so neat that you can watch her build her nest and take photos! The heron and the hawk are great shots, and all the scenes of what your countryside looks like. A walk with you is always a breath of fresh air for all who take it with you :-) You have such a keen observiing eye as well as great photography skills. So good to see you post and know you are well. Hugs and prayers for you and your mom.

Lin: Lovely captures and that squirrel pose is precious.
Welcome back and what a serie of photos. It looks like the winter was really cold!!! Nice icy pictures but my favorites are the squirrels... They are cute and well taken.
always such a delight to visit you and your gorgeous pictures, lin :D

Lin, I'm SO glad to see you back and to enjoy once again all your wonderful walks. I love your squirrels. They are just huggable! The ice climbers are amazing too, and very daring I think. I'd much rather watch them.
Even though I'm way to tired of all the snow, your images make it still gorgeous.
Take care, and come back real soon.
Glad to hear your Mom is improving.

Fabulous photos and love the squirrels. What great light you capture with your camera.
Beautiful series of images showing the winter and snow. The 2nd image of the squirrel and the typical winter drive are just such amazing compositions.
My best wishes are with you and your mom.
Your photos are wonderful! I just stumbled upon your blog when searching out wildlife art blogs, and your photos are inspiring. I particularly like the little squirrel poking out of the stump - what a neat image! As a wildlife artist I'm always looking for unique photos... you have a keen eye for this! Thanks for sharing!

What lovely photos. Here I live on the CT coast and deer in our yard are a weekly occurrence. Go figure!
Those two photos of the ice and its climbers are wonderful - though you'd never catch me doing that!
Glad to ~see~ you. Do take care of you as well as your mom.
Hi Sandpiper!
It is so great to hear from you again and see your beautiful nature pictures!!
Wow what a collection you have put together - it is some of winter at its finest I must say! My favorite ones are the squirrels, they are so adorable and hardy little ones!
Anyhow great to hear that things are a little better!
All the best,
Evita
What great photos! Some of the squirrel ones are the sweetest things I've seen! Also love your shadows on the snow. My favorite is all the tree trunks in the snow with shadows.
I'm sorry to hear about your Mother. Its wonderful to know you go to visit her regularly, and I hope you keep your own health and spirits up. My best wishes to you in this time.
The photos are wonderful and cheery. Does this mother squirrel pull out her coat closer to her delivery date? There are mother black squirrels in my residential area that run around outside half-naked in the early spring because they've made a nest for their kits.
Missed your blog for some time. Anyway here I am & great collection of photos.
Beautiful photos as always,
Best wishes for your mum
Keep smiling and keep taking this quality of images. Thanks for the look.
Hi Lin!
I've been away from blogging for a while and came back to see a post from you! Yay!
Red-Shouldereds are my favorite hawks. I esp. like their voices early in the morning.
And, you have a Great Blue nearby you home? Lucky YOU!
Your ice images are stunning, Lin. I'm enjoying "real" winters through blogging. We had 2 inches of snow in Charlotte this year. HA!
Look forward to hearing more from you.
Mary
Love this post. The pictures are beautiful. The squirrels are my favorites.
Debbie
one of the cutest animal is the squirrel. you cant find one in the philippines. so i only see them on tvs and books. and now in your blog.
What an amazing blog you have. I love all of the imagery. It sure is picturesque up in your neck of the woods. My toes get a little numb with frostbite just thinking of your chilly winter though.
What great shots...all of them! That one of the young squirrel in the stump is so precious...and why isn't that blue heron in Florida?! :-)
I hope you're well and I just love the squirrel photos! They scamper everywhere in the spring looking for food, and are often delighted when I share my birds' left-over and uneaten seed and nuts with them.
My good wishes to your mother, that she keeps improving day by day.
those creatures maybe menacing, but cute!!..:D
i enjoyed ur images man, more of this, :D rgds,
My god, Looks like you live in heaven! or you make us feel like you do through your pics. I just loved the squirrel with just the head sticking out of the bark. How do you manage to capture such delicate moments ?.... You should really come out with a book of this blog, I will be the first to buy it and treat myself to it whenever I want to feel good or relaxing! You are the best!
It's Lin vs. the Groundhog in an epic battle for spring! I love the low angle of light in many of your photographs. They're really beautiful.
Ben
Squirrel! Hope I can see one too for real, there's nothing here in Philippines. Anyway, that encrusted ice on branches - so cool!
You got great shots!
They're all wonderful!
Cheers!
Hope all is well with you, God bless!
P.S.
I'm new here, and I enjoyed you blog ^___^
I dropped back to see how you were doing, and I do hope all is well with you and your family.
