I awoke at dawn and looked out the window and could only see sihouettes. This little squirrel was an early riser..
I looked down at the brook in my backyard and saw SNOW PANCAKES!!! I puzzled over these frozen floating circles for awhile. Were they caps of frozen ice and snow that had come off the tops of rocks and then flipped over in the brook? Not really sure. After some discussion, I have come to an agreement that they must be frozen foam. Occasionally, foam comes down from the waterfall above, and I guess, this time, it froze. It looks like that bigger piece along the edge, froze while it was hugging the edge of the stream, and the dozen or so round "pancakes" were broken off pieces that got caught in a sort of eddy and twirled around to create the round shape. I'm sorry, it's not a very good picture. I was shooting from an upstairs window. I still don't have my good camera back from repair, and the little one I'm using doesn't always zoom very well. .
A dove stood on the frozen ground awaiting the filling of the feeders
The sun was shining on the crusty surface,
and drawing shadow pictures on the golden palette
Soon the sun was high enough that I could see something other than sihouettes, so it was time to get out and take a drive
Heading out into the farmlands, right away I saw this Red-Tailed Hawk. She was perched on a branch, bigger than life, and fairly low down, allowing for some great picture taking. She wasn't at all upset by my presence, so I stood and took pictures, and when I left she was still sitting there.
I passed by this gambrel roof barn
Drove by a ski place and there were a lot of people waiting to ride the conveyor to the top of the hill. Besides skiing, this place has trails for tubing, skating, racing, snowboarding, snowbikes, and more. People were taking advantage of the beautiful weather and getting out to enjoy it. I saw some kids with skates playing ice hockey on a small pond, too.
A turkey vulture soared overhead
Moving on, I saw another farm in the countryside
While some were thinking of skiing and skating, others were out enjoying the open water.
Okay, don't laugh!! When it comes to Bald Eagles, I'll take what I can get!! ;-)
I noticed that some shrubs and trees are beginning to get buds
And this tree had a lot of buds on it. The traffic light was just my strange sense of humor... and it IS color!! ;-)So, that ended another day of searching for color.

Beautiful photos! I came in by Nina's
I am a fellow nature lover myself..seems we are all blessed in seeing hawks this week! Nice to meet you :)NG
Another nice set of photos. Unfortunately I didn't get to take any photographs this weekend. I had to shovel off my roof before the rain came today and weighed it all down.
Thank you, Nature Girl and John!
Welcome, Nature Girl. I'm glad you found your way here from Nina's beautiful blog. Thank you for the nice comment. I have to go out for awhile now, but I'll be back to visit your blog later today! I'm looking forward to it.
Hi John, Good to see you again! Too bad about having to shovel snow off the roof. I hope you get in some camera time soon!
I woke up to a temperature in the high 50s this morning and rain. Most of the snow on the ground has melted or washed away now.
Snow pancakes...cool! The hawk is beautiful!
It seems your area is still chilled--that hawk looks fluffy!
She must've sensed your gentle sprit, not flying off with you near.
That's the ultimate compliment!
"...shadow pictures on the golden palette" Your words are lovely as your pictures.
I miss visiting your blog for a day or two sometimes, but always catch up on those entries I've missed before going on. It's always worth the time.
Hi Mary, Thank you! We not only had snow pancakes, but I also made the eating kind for breakfast! ;-)
Hi Nina, thank you. It was really cold out and the hawk was all fluffed up. She was soooooo pretty!
Hi Bobbie, it's good to see you. Thank you so much. I understand about not being able to visit every day. I try to get to them all, but I run out of time sometimes. I always catch up on the next visit, too.
Some beautiful photos-I especially like the hawk photo-I've never heard of frozen foam-I wonder if you could make money off the idea.-Sell it as a dessert at a nature store or something.
Hi Larry! Thanks for stopping by. I like the way you think!! Anytime somebody mentions dessert, I'm up for it! ;-)
Hey Lin, sandpiper. I loved the Red-tail Hawk. Gosh I wish I could get that close. The ones I see are always shy and fly away!! Do you really take all those beautiful pictures on your drives...it is soooo pretty there. Your photos make everything look wonderful. It is a lot of work to take the photos and then get them in the blog right away like you do. We appreciate it. I try to get in here every day but sometimes save it up for a longer visit.
Hi Rambler! Thanks for coming by and for your nice comments. Glad you like the hawk picture! Most often, they are pretty far from me, too, but this one was very cooperative. I'm lucky enough to live in an area where there are a lot of nature places within a very short distance, so it's easy for me to drive just a couple of minutes to take pictures. If I don't process the pictures right away, they get ahead of me and then I have a real mess on my hands, so I try to do it quickly.
I understand about not getting by every day. I try to visit blogs every day, but sometimes life interferes. I do catch up though as soon as I can. I hate to miss anything!
Love the red tailed hawk
